Thirty people died in traffic accidents in Chile during end-of-year vacation period, Chilean police officials reported on Tuesday.
The death toll in this year's celebration period increased overthe same period last year, during which 22 people died in accidents.
Thousands of vehicles are expected to return to Santiago, Chile's capital on Tuesday from the coastal city of Valparaiso where local inhabitants celebrate the new year.
Chilean police reported that some one million people left Santiago to take vacations away from the capital. Police officers are carrying out special surveillance on roads and highways to the capital to avoid traffic accidents.
