Senior Advisor to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse on the peace process with the Tamil Tigers Jayantha Dhanapala has offered his resignation on Sunday.
A statement issued by Dhanapala said he had offered to resign due to personal reasons. Dhanapala served in this capacity from December 1, 2005 and also headed the government Secretariat to Co-ordinate the peace process.
Dhanapala, a former Sri Lankan diplomat, has served in the UN disarmament committee and was in the running for the UN Secretary General's post too.
His announcement came just three days after the government had served notice on the Norwegian peace facilitators that Colombo would be abrogating the February 2002 ceasefire with the Tamil Tigers on January 16.
Meanwhile the security authorities here Sunday said that some 198 people were detained for failing to show their proper identities in a special security operation conducted in all police areas within the island's western province.
