Physicians of Bangladesh's detained former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday formally asked chief advisor of the Bangladesh caretaker government Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed to allow Hasina to go to the United States for medical treatment.

Hasina, also president of Awami League party, one of the two major parties in Bangladesh, is suffering from several complications of her eyes, ears and blood pressure.

She was arrested on July 16 last year on charge of extortion of 30 million taka (about 428,571 U.S. dollars) from a private energy company while she was in power.

Eye specialist Prof Syed Modasser Ali, ENT specialist Prof. Pran Gopal Dutta, Gynecologist Prof Shaila Khatun and Medicine specialist Prof Abdullah made the request in a joint application to the chief advisor.

In the application, the physicians said Hasina should be allowed to leave the country for the United States for medical treatment due to her damaged ears caused by grenade blasts in a rally on Aug. 21, 2004.

"As her personal physicians we feel that Sheikh Hasina should immediately be sent to USA for better treatment," Dr Modasser told local media.

Meanwhile, acting President of Awami League Zillur Rahman told reporters that Sheikh Hasina may agree to go abroad for her treatment unconditionally.

"She is now in absolute solitary confinement," Zillur said, adding her health condition is deteriorating.

But under the emergency rule, an accused can not be granted bail.

Bangladesh President Iajuddin Ahmed declared the state of emergency on Jan. 11, 2007 to quell political turmoil over the abortive parliamentary polls set for Jan. 22 last year.
