At least 12 Tamil Tiger rebels have been killed in clashes with government troops in the island's northern Jaffna peninsula, defense officials said Monday.
Ten of them had died when the troops attacked Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) bunker positions in Muhamalai throughout Sunday while two of them were killed in a grenade explosion when confronted by the troops, officials said.
The troops say that they have been successful in destroying LTTE bunkers in Jaffna peninsula in recent days.
More clashes between the troops and the rebels are expected now as the government has given notice of action to abrogate the Norwegian backed ceasefire of February 2002.
The government says it was ready to completely rid the northern province of rebels as they have already cleared the eastern province from the LTTE control.
More than 70,000 people have died in the conflict since the mid1980s. The LTTE rebels have been fighting to set up a separate homeland for the Tamil minority in the combined north and eastern provinces claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhalese majority.
