Eight passengers were killed on Monday when a chartered bus ran off a wet road and rolled over in southeastern Utah, authorities said.
The accident also injured 20 others about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of Mexican Hat, a remote area in Southeastern Utah, said Trooper Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol.
The chartered bus, carrying 51 passengers who were returning home from a ski trip, failed to negotiate a curve and rolled over several times 41 feet down an embankment, Roden said.
"When the vehicle was overturning, the roof of the bus split open and multiple occupants of the vehicle were ejected," he said.
The driver suffered minor injuries, he added.
Roden said the bus was en route from Telluride, Colorado to Phoenix, Arizona after a ski trip.
Mexican Hat is in the Four Corners region where Utah meets Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico. Rescue crews from all four states were sent to help.
