U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has asked Jendayi Frazer, her top envoy to Africa, to prolong her mission to Kenya to help reconcile the gap between President Mwai Kibaki and the opposition, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Tuesday.
"The secretary asked her to stay in the region and as long as she, Jendayi, could play a useful and helpful role, the secretary asked her to stay out there," McCormack said.
"We are encouraging both sides to communicate with one another," McCormack said.
Frazer, while visiting Kenya, called for an end to the post election violence in Kenya and said both President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga who she met on Monday are both willing to have dialogue.
Frazer also called on political leaders in Kenya to stop their supporters from engaging in violent acts, saying it was imperative that all Kenyans involve themselves in peace overtures so as to quickly restore sanity to the country.
Over 350 people have been killed as a result of the violence prompted by the disputed presidential election result and 250,000 people have been internally displaced in the country as a result of the violence.
