Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanyake has pledged to look into the safety concerns of opposition parliamentarians following protest in the assembly by the legislators belonging to the main opposition United National Party (UNP), parliamentary officials said.
The UNP members held placards and banners in the assembly when parliament met here Tuesday for the first time in the new year. They accused the government as responsible for the gunning down of the UNP's sole Tamil minority MP Thiagarajah Maheswaran.
He was murdered at a Hindu temple on the New Year's day. Maheswaran's personal security had been reduced several days before his murder.
Similarly several opposition parliamentarians have complained of reduced security.
Prime Minister Wickramanayake responding to opposition concerns pledged the parliamentary Speaker, WJM Lokubandara, that adequate security measure will be taken to ensure the safety of all opposition parliamentarians.
The UNP parliamentarians say that they are under threat from various armed groups and the reduction of security could lead to them being targeted by the killer groups.
