The United States said Wednesday Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki's clarification on his cabinet appointments was "very positive."
"He's now come out and clarified where he stands on this, and that's very positive," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.
"What's really important is that they actually get to talking and not have this be an obstacle," McCormack said, adding that top U.S. envoy for Africa Jendayi Frazer talked with Kibaki about the cabinet appointments on Tuesday.
According to media reports, Kibaki, who named a 17-member cabinet on Tuesday, said his cabinet appointments were meant to keep the government running, but not antagonize the opposition.
Nearly 500 people have been killed as a result of the violence prompted by the disputed presidential election result and 250,000 people have been internally displaced in the eastern African country as a result of the violence.
