New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has quit the U.S. Democratic presidential nomination race after coming fourth in the campaign's first two contests, CNN said Wednesday.
"The numbers are the reason" for Richardson's departure, a party strategist said, referring to Richardson's lack of votes and money.
Richardson, who served as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations(UN) and energy secretary in the Clinton administration, drew 5 percent of the votes in Tuesday's New Hampshire primary.
He received 2 percent in last week's Iowa caucuses, lagging far behind Democratic senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and former Senator John Edwards.
A public announcement is planned Thursday in New Mexico.
During his White House bid in September 2007, Richardson raised about 19 million U.S. dollars of which he has spent 13 million, according to the country's Federal Election Commission.
