The United States has designated the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, a Kurdish militant group that has committed attacks through Turkey, as a terrorism threat to U.S. interests and blocked its assets, local media reported Thursday.
The Kurdistan Freedom Falcons, also called the Kurdish Freedom Hawks, or TAK by its Kurdish acronym, has been operating in southern Turkey and northern Iraq with goal of securing Kurdish independence.
The TAK is believed to be linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK rebels.
The U.S. designation is meant to disrupt alleged terrorists' financial support network by blocking their assets and the assets of those thought to be helping them, the report said.
U.S. President George W. Bush met Turkish President Abdullah Gul at the White House Tuesday, and pledged to support Turkey's efforts to fight the PKK, which is, he said, an enemy to Turkey, Iraq and "to people who want to live in peace."
