Two people were injured Thursday after a helicopter crashed in a wooded area in Canada's eastern city of St. John's.

The helicopter went down in a boggy, wooded area off a main road in the north end of St. John's, provincial capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, shortly before 3 p.m. local time, police said.

The two victims were alert and conscious when they were transported to hospital, but there was no indication on the extent of their injuries.

A witness said he saw the chopper moments before it went down and that its back end was sticking up in the air. The chopper's propellers were intact but its back end appeared to be broken off after it crashed into the woods, he said.

Weather did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
