Lebanese police stormed a house on Thursday in the northern city of Tripoli, arresting Nabil Rahim, a leading member of Fatah al-Islam which fought a three-month battle with Lebanese army last year, local Naharnet news website reported.

Rahim, a Lebanese citizen, was "the main coordinator between terrorist organizations inside and outside Lebanon," a police statement was quoted as saying.

Security officials said Rahim was detained along with his wife, adding the couple had been renting an apartment in the city's Abu Samra neighborhood.

The three-month fighting between Fatah al-Islam and Lebanese army troops ended in September when the army overran a Palestinian refugees camp in northern Lebanon, arresting many of its fighters.

Some Fatah al-Islam members, including its Palestinian leader Shaker Youssef Abssi, escaped.

The Lebanese government has said at least 169 soldiers, 287Fatah al-Islam insurgents and 47 civilians had been killed and about 31,000 refugees fled the camp.
