Most people in the Netherlands are hoping a Democrat gets elected as the next president of the United States, Dutch media quoted an opinion poll as showing Thursday.

About 60 percent of those polled said they would prefer the next occupant of the White House to be a Democrat. Just 8 percent said they prefer to see a Republican elected, according to a survey by pollster TNS NIPO.

Among the Dutch respondents who are familiar with more than one of the American presidential candidates, 40 percent hope that Hillary Clinton wins the elections.

Her main rival within the Democrats Barrack Obama follows with 35 percent.

Obama's popularity among the Dutch public has grown strongly over the past few months. 13 percent of the Dutch said in November last year they preferred Obama, while Clinton had the support of 64 percent.
