Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed his satisfaction that the Czech Republic shares similar views with Poland on U.S. plans to base elements of missile defense system in the two countries.
"It is with great satisfaction that I have received the information from the Czech side and from Prime Minister Topolanek for Poland and the Czech Republic to agree issues relating to the installation of the shield," Polish news agency PAP quoted Tusk assaying.
Tusk, paying a one-day visit to the Czech Republic on Thursday, stressed that Poland's demands relating to the shield met with full understanding of the Czech prime minister.
He stressed that Poland and the Czech Republic do not intend to slow down or accelerate negotiations on the shield. The most important thing is not the pace of negotiations but whether or not Polish and Czech demands are met, Tusk said.
The U.S. wants to place 10 interceptors in Poland to protect the United States and Europe against potential attacks from what it has called "rogue" states. The system would also include a radar base in the neighboring Czech Republic.
Russia has fiercely opposed the plan, saying such an installation so close to its territory poses a threat to its national security, and has warned it could target the base in Poland with missiles.
