The Sri Lankan Air Force conducted an air strike against the rebels' Sea Tiger base, said the military on Friday.

Defense officials said the fighter jets bombed an LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) Sea Tiger base at Allampili in the northern Mullaithivu district at around 8:45 a.m. local time (0315 GMT).

The Sea Tiger base was destroyed by the bombardment, officials said.

The Northern Province is now the major battlefield between government troops and the LTTE rebels after the military said in mid-July that the entire Eastern Province had been free of rebels.

More than 5,000 people have been killed in the new wave of violence since the end of 2005.

Claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority, the LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east.
