Top U.S. nuclear envoy Christopher Hill arrived in Moscow on Friday for consultations with Russian diplomats over the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and the resumption of the six-party talks, Russian news agencies reported.
The U.S. diplomat is expected to meet with Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov, the head of the Russian delegation to the six-party talks, and Russia's ambassador-at-large Vladimir Rakhmanin.
They will discuss the date of the next round of the six-party talks, and prospects for holding a ministerial meeting of the "sextet," a Russian diplomat was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
"Christopher Hill has already visited four countries participating in the six-party talks," the diplomat said, "We're very interested in hearing his point of view."
Hill's tours came after the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) missed the deadline to list all its nuclear programs by the end of 2007.
He had visited Japan, the South Korea and China before arriving in Moscow.
According to agreements reached in October at the six-party talks, the DPRK was to disable its key nuclear facilities at the Yongbyon complex, and declare all other nuclear programs by the end of 2007.
"Nevertheless, Moscow is not inclined to dramatize the situation. Both delays and speed-ups are possible in the six-party process. The key is that Russia, as all the other members of the sextet, is committed to promoting the negotiations so as to find a solution to the DPRK nuclear issue," the diplomat said.
