Seven high school students and one teacher were killed when their bus collided with a transport truck overnight in Canada's eastern New Brunswick province, reports said Saturday.

The accident took place just after midnight when the students returned from a basketball game to their native city of Bathurst. The driver of the bus lost control and collided head-on with a truck just outside the city, police said.

Twelve people, including members of a school basketball team from Bathurst, were riding in the bus. Four people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Road conditions were said to be slippery around the time of the crash, with freezing rain and snow falling in the area, which is located in the northeastern end of New Brunswick.
