The Slovenian presidency of the European Union on Saturday urged all the parties in Lebanon to show flexibility and responsibility to reach compromise for the country's presidential election following the latest postponement.

"The presidency calls upon the parties to use the time frame until Jan. 21 to work flexibly and responsibly in order to finalize an agreement that allows for the election of the new president in a spirit of consensus, in full respect of the Lebanese constitutional norms and democratic institutions, and free from outside interference," the presidency said in a statement.

While calling for the full implementation of the respective U.N. Security Council resolutions, the EU presidency pledges its strong support for the new president and the new government committed to Lebanon's sovereignty and independence.

Despite intense efforts by the Arab league in the search for away out of the current political crisis in Lebanon, the session at which a new president is to be elected was put off for the 12th time on Friday.

Speaker of Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri postponed the session after meeting Arab League chief Amr Mussa, who had been holding talks with Lebanese leaders since Wednesday in the hope of reaching consensus over the Arab League plan to resolve the crisis.

The Arab League, backed by the EU presidency, calls for the election of a president and the formation of a national unity government in Lebanon, as well as the adoption of a new electoral law.
