The Philippine military on Sunday dismissed new rumors that some discontented soldiers would stage another coup attempt this month against the government as nothing serious.
Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr. told local media that the military would be ready to thwart any destabilization attempt again.
Philippine Justice Secretary Raul Gonzales told the media last week he received intelligence information indicating that anti-government groups were hatching another destabilization move on Jan. 22.
Gonzales said the plan was similar to the Nov. 29 standoff at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati, which was foiled several hours later.
The move in November was led by several ex-coup plotters from the military, including an opposition senator who used to be a mutiny officer and a former coup leader from the army, who walked out of a court holding a hearing on their suspected coup and mutiny acts in the past.
But Esperon said the military would still try to validate the information disclosed by Gonzales.
"That's subject of our verification," said Esperon. "Let's justsee, details might crop up. Let's just see, it's better if we do not talk about it. What's important is that we are ready."
Esperon said lingering threats of "adventurism" from some discontented soldiers were still coming from the same groups loyal to the people who staged the failed coup in Makati last November.
