Vietnam held a grand ceremony here Sunday evening to highlight importance of the coming 1,000th founding anniversary of capital Hanoi in 2010.
The anniversary, which falls on Oct. 10, 2010, will promote people's pride of the 1,000-year-old capital, and remind them to make greater contribution to the city's development, Nguyen The Thao, chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, said at the ceremony.
"We call for all people in the capital and the country, overseas Vietnamese and international friends to continue to build a more beautiful, civilized and wealthier capital," he said.
At the ceremony, a contest was launched to appeal to all people to design a logo for the 1,000th founding ceremony, and a digital clock erected to start the 1,000-day countdown to the anniversary.
On Sunday morning, various cultural activities took place in Hanoi, including folk arts performances, and a photo exhibition which showcased 180 large photos of the city in the past and nowadays.
