France's opposition Socialist Party on Sunday rejected the proposal that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair could be the first president of the European Union (EU).
Citing Blair's support for the U.S.-led military operation against Iraq, Francois Hollande, head of the Socialist Party, said the former British PM does not fit the profile for the EU president.
"We need a president who could be a representative of a political Europe which is independent from the United States," Hollande said.
Hollande's remarks came as French President Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his strong backing for Blair's efforts to become the EU president, a post which is to be set up later this year.
