More than 70 percent of Georgians stand for the country joining NATO in a referendum, Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) Chairman Levan Tarkhnishvili announced Sunday.
The referendum was held simultaneously with the Jan. 5 presidential election, in which U.S.-supported Mikhail Saakashvili won his second presidential term with 53.47 percent of votes.
72.5 percent of voters who took part in the referendum said they supported Georgia's accession into NATO, Tarkhnishvili said.
The CEC has finished the job of counting ballots and 69.8 percent of those who cast ballots voted for holding early parliamentary elections in this spring, Tarkhnishvili said at a press conference Sunday evening.
