U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has endorsed the idea to send more troops to Afghanistan, but details are still to be worked out, officials said Monday.

The White House confirmed that it has received a recommendation from Gates about the reinforcement plan.

The move indicates that the plan has been approved by the defense secretary but final decision will be given by President George W. Bush, who is visiting the Middle East.

Last week, Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell said Gates was considering sending some 3,000 Marines to Afghanistan to thwart any spring offensive by Taliban militants.
