Iran on Monday lashed out at U.S. President George W. Bush's recent speech that accused Tehran of the world's "leading state sponsor of terror."
"Bush's statements are the signs of desperation, hopelessness and the sense of failure in his last months of presidency," Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said in a statement.
He said that Bush has failed to acquire the consent of the Islamic and Arab countries in the region due to his "unilateral support of the Zionist regime (Israel)."
"Bush needs to know that there is a serious hatred towards his policies inside the United States and all over the world," Hosseini added.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman maintained that Washington's policy to isolate Iran "is already doomed to failure."
"The Islamic Republic of Iran and the countries of the region have lived in peace for a longer time than the history of the United States," he said.
"The strong intention of the countries in the region is based on the strengthening of the bilateral relations," Hosseini said. "This has always been one of the principles of our foreign policy."
In a policy speech delivered Sunday afternoon in the United Arab Emirates, Bush said, "Iran is today the world's leading state sponsor of terror."
The U.S. president accused Iran of supporting Hezbollah, Hamas, Taliban, al-Qaida and its affiliates as well as extremist Shiites in Iraq, defying the United Nations and destabilizing the region by refusing to be open about its nuclear program.
"Iran's actions threaten the security of nations everywhere," Bush added.
Bush arrived in the Saudi capital on Monday afternoon to start a two-day visit to the oil-rich kingdom after visiting the United Arab Emirates.
After the kingdom, Bush will also visit Egypt, the last leg of his 8-day Middle East regional tour. Before Saudi Arabia, Bush had visited Israel, the Palestinian territories, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
