At least six people died, including three police officers, and four more were injured in three separate armed attacks on Tuesday in northern Mexico, local authorities said.
In the early hours of Tuesday, unidentified gunmen killed the police chief and deputy chief in the La Mesa neighborhood of the city of Tijuana, Jose de Jesus Arias Rico and Elber Escobedo Marquez.
The two were in a private car when they were overtaken by another car from which the gunmen sprayed the vehicle with AK-47 semi-automatic rifle fire.
Hours later, a group of gunmen attacked the home of Margarito Saldana, police chief in Tijuana's Los Pinos neighborhood, killing Saldana and his daughter and wounding his wife, who died later in the hospital. Three minors who were also at Saldana's home escaped with less serious injuries.
In what appeared to be an attack by the same group later on a home that apparently belonged to the head of Saldana's bodyguards, the attackers gunned down a man who was not identified.
The authorities said the six killings were apparently a revenge for 11 people arrested on charges of being involved in organized crime and also for the killing of an armed robber who had been dressed as a police officer on Monday in Tijuana.
In a separate incident, police clashed with robbers who attacked a bank armored car. Two people were injured and the other two arrested.
Local media reported that 114 people were killed in violence in Mexico in the first two weeks of the year. On Monday alone, 17 people were killed in 10 different Mexican states. Source:Xinhua
