Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend the inauguration ceremony of Georgia's re-elected president Mikhail Saakashvili, the Itar-Tass news agency reported Tuesday.
Saakashvili gained another five-year mandate in the snap presidential elections held in the Caucasus nation on Jan. 5. His inauguration is due to be held on Jan. 20.
Saakashvili has expressed his willingness to improve relations with Russia. He said after winning re-election that he was ready to stretch out a hand to Russia and improve bilateral relations.
Russian ambassador to Georgia Vyacheslav Kovalenko has said that Moscow is also considering normalizing ties with Georgia.
Relations between the two countries have remained tense over such issues as Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as well as its strive for NATO membership.
