The European Union urged here on Wednesday Pakistan to do everything possible to improve the conditions for forthcoming parliamentary elections.

"Concrete steps should and could be taken by the state and the electoral authorities to improve the conditions for elections," EU External Affairs Commissioner Benita Ferrero Waldner said at a plenary session of the European Parliament.

She said EU missions in Islamabad and the election observers in the Asian country have already pinpointed necessary improvements.

These points will be addressed during Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf's official visit to Brussels next Monday.

In Pakistan, parliamentary elections were previously scheduled on Jan. 8 but delayed until Feb. 18 because of violence erupted in several Pakistani cities after former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on Dec. 27.

The EU has sent a mission of election observers to make sure that the vote could be held in a fair and free manner.
