Barbados' opposition Democratic Labor Party (DLP) is set to take power after winning the parliamentary elections in the Carribean island state Wednesday.
The DLP secured 20 seats in the 30-member House of Assembly, the state's election authorities said, quoted by reports from Barbados' capital Bridgetown.
Outgoing Prime Minister Owen Arthur conceded defeat early Wednesday. His Labor Party, in power since September 1994, had been seeking a fourth consecutive term in this year's election.
Meanwhile, DLP chief David Thompson, who is expected to be sworn in as the new prime minister later Wednesday, vowed the new government would "focus on issues that matter most to the people."
A former British colony with a population of 280,000, Barbados has grown into one of the strongest economies in the Caribbean region through high-end tourism, light industry and offshore financial services.
