Mexico and the United States announced a project Wednesday to fight illegal arms trafficking to reduce violence in some Mexican and U.S. states.
After meeting with his Mexican counterpart Eduardo Medina Mora, U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said once the project is enforced, they will be able to electronically trace the weapons used in the Mexican territory and determine their origin.
Mukasey told reporters at the prosecutor office that they are also planning to develop the system in Spanish so that Mexican officials can easily use it.
He said they had collected a large amount of resources and carried out investigation into arms traffickers who sell and distribute weapons from the United States.
The project will also help to reduce illegal arms sales, because if the fact has proved that the weapons were purchased in the United States for organized crime instead of for self defense, the stores' licenses would be canceled.
Mora said that he and Mukasey also discussed other issues, including drug trafficking, human smuggling, confiscation of assets and money laundering. Source: Xinhua
