Ahmed Bahar, deputy speaker of the Hamas-held Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC), on Thursday expressed hope that a short phone conversation between President Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah and a Hamas leading member may be "an entry to end the Palestinian divisions."

Abbas phoned Mahmoud Zahar, one of Hamas' hard-liners, to console him on his son's death in an Israeli army strike in Gaza city. The conversation is the first such one since Hamas routed pro-Abbas forces and took over Gaza Strip in June.

"The blood unites the people," said Ahmed Bahar, "We hope this phone call will be the beginning to reunite the Palestinian people."

He also expressed hope that Abbas' initiative be a beginning to start dialogue between Hamas and Fatah factions.
