The evacuation of inhabitants continues despite the reduced activity of Colombia's Galeras volcano, which erupted on Thursday night but caused no injuries, according to local authorities.
Although Galeras stopped emitting volcanic substances after the initial eruption, inhabitants must be transferred to safe refuges as a precaution, Colombian Geology and Mining Institute technical director Cesar Lopez said on Friday.
The Galeras volcano "is not ejecting volcanic substances but the community must be attentive to the information presented by local and regional emergency committees," Lopez said.
He called for the continued evacuation amid reports that while up to 8,000 inhabitants in the risk zone need to be moved to saferplaces, only 100 of them have taken refuge. Many people pay no heed to the warning.
The Galeras volcano, 920 km south of the capital Bogota, is in Narino province, bordering Ecuador. It has previously erupted in 1992, 1993, 2004 and 2006. Source: Xinhua
