The newly elected House of Representatives of Thailand will convene its first session on Monday after the Election Commission (EC) Friday endorsed another 26 winning candidates to fill the constitutional quorum for the convening of parliament.
The EC certified the electoral victories of another 26 MP candidates, who contested for the 480-seat House during the Dec. 23 general election, the first since a military coup ousted the former elected government led by Thaksin Shinwatra.
The move means so far there were 460 elected Member of Parliaments endorsed by the EC, accounting for more than 95 percent of the total 480 seats in the House and fulfilling the requirement by the Constitution 2007 to convene the first House session.
Surapong Suebwonglee, secretary general of the People Power Party (PPP), which won the most seats in the Dec. 23 election, said the first session will convene next Monday.
Official voting results have seen the PPP capture 233 seats in the House and grant it the priority to lead a coalition government. The PPP is expected to officially announce a coalition with five other smaller parties at a joint press conference on Saturday.
The Democrat Party, second-placed in the general election with 165 seats, will stay as the sole opposition party in the House.
According to Surapong, the House will choose a House Speaker next Wednesday and a Prime Minister next Friday. The cabinet lineup is to be disclosed in February. Source: Xinhua
