Ailing former president of Indonesia Soeharto surprisingly showed some improvements after being treated for 16 days for multiple organ failure and having passed several critical phases, his doctors said Saturday.
His hemoglobin level and blood pressures were back to stable condition although he was still on the ventilator, said Dr. Mardjo Soebiandono, who heads a large doctor team on the former ruler.
"Our program today is to ... reduce his reliance on respirator," Mardjo told a press conference at the Pertamina Hospital here where Soeharto was being treated.
He added there were fewer signs of systemic infection than the day before.
Team member Christian Johannes also said Soeharto's lungs and heart indicated some recovery.
"In general, (his condition) makes some progress," he said.
