The German government condemned on Monday the targeting of Israeli territory by missile attacks from the Gaza Strip.

"We have made very clear that in particular the missiles from the Gaza Strip must come to an end," Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Jaeger told a press conference in Berlin.

"It cannot be allowed that the lives of the people in Israel are continually threatened in a terrorist fashion from Gaza," Jaeger said.

The Hamas administration in the Gaza Strip warned on Monday of a "catastrophe" if Israel did not end its blockade.

Gaza's only power plant, which operates on industrial diesel, shut down Sunday evening, leaving large parts of the strip in darkness and without power.

Israel has accused Hamas of exaggerating the humanitarian situation in Gaza for "propaganda" purposes.
