Afghan police have killed six Taliban insurgents including two of their commanders in southern province of Kandahar, the Interior Ministry said in a press release issued on Tuesday.

"Two local commanders of Taliban namely Mullah Zukria and Mullah Agha Jan along with four of their men were killed as they came in contact with police in Jalai district of Kandahar on Jan. 20," said the ministry.

The police also have detained several suspects on charge of having links with Taliban insurgents from the neighboring Arghandab district, it added.

The police, with support from Afghan army and the U.S.-led Coalition forces, launched a clean up operation in the eastern Paktia province on Sunday, said the ministry in another press release.

The Taliban, ousted by the U.S.-led invasion in late 2001, has waged years-long insurgency against the Afghan administration and continued to attack Afghan security forces and foreign troops.

Rising militancy-related violence killed over 6,000 people in the post-Taliban nation last year. Analysts and NATO commanders have expected an upsurge of guerrilla-style attacks by Taliban militants in 2008.
