The United States said Tuesday that the meeting of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Germany in Berlin sends Iran a strong message to comply with U.N. Security Council resolutions.
"It sends a strong message to Iran that it needs to comply with U.N. Chapter 7 resolutions. They're becoming increasingly isolated, and I think this shows that they aren't able to divide us in our commitment to this effort," State Department acting spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said at a briefing.
Gallegos said the meeting also reaffirmed a two-track strategy, a strategy that offers Iran incentives if it suspends uranium enrichment, or risk new U.N. sanctions.
According to media reports, the meeting in Berlin reached an accord on Tuesday on a new U.N. Security Council resolution against Iran and the resolution will be presented to the Security Council in the coming weeks.
Washington has accused Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons under the cover of a civilian nuclear program. Iran has denied U.S. charges and insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.
