The United States welcomed the signing of a peace agreement by warring parties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), a White House spokeswoman said Wednesday.
It is the first time since the end of the last war in the DRC in 2003 that armed groups collectively and publicly came together to give their commitment to a cease-fire accord.
Press Secretary Dana Perino said in a statement that "The United States welcomes the signing of a peace agreement with the goal of helping bring lasting stability to eastern Congo and addressing the underlying causes of the conflict."
Washington urged all parties to immediately implement the peace deal and said it will make concerted efforts with the international community to help achieve peace and prosperity in the eastern DRC, she added.
The armed groups in eastern Nord-Kivu province of the DRC signed a ceasefire deal Wednesday to end hostilities at the conclusion of the Conference for Peace, Security, and Development in North and South Kivu.
The province, where the national army has amassed a 25,000-strong force as part of a move to disarm about 4,000 soldiers loyal to renegade Tutsi general Laurent Nkunda, has been the scene of heavy fighting between government and rebel forces since August 2007. Source:Xinhua
