Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa on Thursday termed the Israeli blockade of the Gaza strip and the campaign to starve the people there as a violation of the international humanitarian law, the Egyptian MENA news agency reported.

Moussa, who is currently in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum annual meeting, was quoted by MENA as saying that the Gaza situation is "deplorable" as a result of a starving campaign, a campaign to starve the people over there.

The AL chief also condemned the Gaza blockade as it undermined the already struggling peace process after the Middle East peace conference held in Annapolis, Maryland in the United States last November.

He also noted that no single issue has been negotiated two months after the Annapolis conference, terming the continuation of Israel's building of Jewish settlements as a killer for the peace process.

As the hope to lift Gaza siege faded, Hamas militants on Wednesday blew up holes in the concrete wall separating southern Gaza and Egypt, allowing tens of thousands of Gazans to enter Egypt to purchase necessities of life.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Wednesday ordered the Egyptian security forces at the Rafah crossing to allow the Palestinians to cross freely the terminal to buy their basic needs.

Israel ordered the shut-down of all Gaza crossings in the wake of Hamas violent takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 and further tightened the siege recently in retaliation to ongoing makeshift rocket attacks carried out by Palestinian militants from Gaza against Israel.
