South Korea and Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will hold this year's first working-level talks on railway cooperation early next week, the Unification Ministry said Friday.
The announcement came as working-level military officials from the two sides met in the truce village of Panmunjom for a one-day meeting to discuss security measures for various joint economic projects.
DPRK proposed in a letter to hold the railway talks from Jan. 29 to 30 in its border town of Kaesong, the ministry said in a statement. The letter was sent to Seoul through its liaison officer at Panmunjom, it said.
During next week's talks, officials of the two sides are scheduled to discuss the repair of the DPRK section of a just-reconnected cross-border railway on the western side of the Korean Peninsula and an agreement to transport a joint cheering squad to the Beijing Olympics by train this year.
Along with the railway projects, South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun and DPRK leader Kim Jong-il agreed to other measures to promote inter-Korean peace and cooperation during their summit.
"Since the transition team classified the repair work as one of the long-term businesses requiring a feasibility study, the transporting of the joint cheering team is likely to be the main issue," a senior ministry official said, requesting anonymity. Source:Xinhua
