Serbia will not give up its interests in relations to Kosovo, Serbian President Boris Tadic said on Friday.
"Serbia defends its interests in Kosovo in respect to internal law and will always do so," Tadic said at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin.
Tadic's statement came a day after Kosovo's Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said the Serbian province is ready to declare independence in coming days.
Serbia and Russia oppose independence for Kosovo.
"Everybody knows how Belgrade regards Russia's position on Kosovo," the Interfax news agency quoted Tadic as saying.
"It would have been difficult for Serbia to protect its interests in Kosovo without such a position," the Serbian president said.
Russia and Serbia are close to each other in terms of culture, language and religion, and one could profit from this proximity "not only in the development of bilateral relations, but also in joint work with other countries," Tadic said.
Tadic met with Putin on Friday to discuss bilateral ties, including investment cooperation, and Kosovo's status, Interfax said.
