The United States said on Monday that there was no indication that the death of an American diplomat in Pakistan earlier in the day has any involvement of "foul play."

"It's a sad, sad event," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said of the death of Keith Ryan, an attache from the Department of Homeland Security working on immigration and customs enforcement at the U.S. embassy in Islamabad.

McCormack expressed condolences to Ryan's family. Noting that investigations were continuing, the spokesman added that "we have no indication at this point that it involves foul play."

Ryan was found shot at his home in the Pakistani capital on Monday. Local police said he apparently shot himself in the head.
