The military in Sri Lanka said Monday at least 14 Tamil Tiger rebels and one soldier were killed in separate clashes between the government troops and the rebels in the northern Mannar district.

Officials from the Media Centre for National Security said seven Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam rebels (LTTE) were killed in an attack launched by the troops at Pallikuli around 1:15 a.m. local time (1945 GMT).

One soldier was killed and two others were injured in the battle.

Another seven rebels were killed by the troops in two clashes at Aadampan around 4:45 a.m. (2315 GMT) and 1:30 p.m. (0800 GMT).

Armed conflicts erupt often between the government troops and the rebels in the northern regions as the government on Jan. 16 announced its withdrawal from the Norwegian-backed ceasefire.

More than 600 people have been killed since the ceasefire officially ended, according to the military.

The six-year-old ceasefire was part of the internationally backed peace process during which nine rounds of talks were held between September 2002 and October 2006.

The LTTE has been fighting since 1983 for an independent state for Sri Lanka's ethnic Tamil minority in the north and east claiming discrimination at the hands of Sinhalese-dominated governments.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in one of the world's longest running ethnic conflict.
