A former town mayor from the southern Philippines was shot dead Tuesday morning while attending a murder hearing at the city hall of the country's capital city of Manila.
The shooting incident took place around 9:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) inside a courtroom at the fourth floor of the Manila City Hall, Philippine TV network GMA News reported.
Reynaldo Yap, 44, a former mayor of Sapang Dalaga town in the southern Misamis Occidental province, was identified dead at a press conference held afterwards by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim.
Yap sustained four gunshot wounds on the chest, Lim said.
Two others were hurt in the shooting accident, including Cesar Sabino, Yap's bodyguard.
The gunman, between 30-35 years old, was wearing a police uniform and he escaped from the scene, Lim added.
Yap was serving a life term for killing his political rival, Victorio Cebedo, in 1992. The confessed gunman, Juditho Cara, had pointed to him as the mastermind.
In 2004, Yap was transferred to solitary confinement for allegedly producing falsified documents that allowed him to go home and vote in the May 10 elections. Source: Xinhua
