U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice urged on Tuesday political leaders of Kenya to seek political solution to December election disputes and to stop violent conflicts thereafter.

"We are certainly asking everyone to maintain calm. It's deeply concerning," Rice told reporters. "There needs to be a political resolution of this conflict."

Rice made the remarks after State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said on Monday that Kenya has "gone from bad to worse, in terms of the violence."

The riots have killed more than 800 people and displaced over 250,000 others in Kenya since the Dec. 27 election.

Kenya's opposition parties accuse President Mwai Kibaki of stealing the presidential vote. Kibaki and main opposition leader Raila Odinga blame each other for the violence.
