The U.N. Security Council decided on Tuesday to stop its discussions on a draft statement that would have called for an end to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.
"Unfortunately, the Security Council has decided to stop discussions upon this issue," said Giadalla Ettalhi of Libya, the council's president for this month.
Ettalhi said the decision was made because council members could not reach a consensus on the nonbinding document, which requires the approval of all 15 members for adoption.
Speaking to reporters after the council meeting, U.S. ambassador Alejandro Wolff said he could not reach an agreement with the Libyan delegation on some of the latest amendments offered by Libya.
Palestine's U.N. observer Ryad Mansour said council members agreed on the "humanitarian side of allowing food, medicine, fuel and electricity to reach the Gaza strip."
Mansour blamed the United States for trying to politicizing the issue, which made it "not possible to have a consensus."
Libya submitted amendments on behalf of Arab states Monday and Tuesday that would want to "balance the political aspect of this issue in a reasonable way," but this effort did not succeed, he said.
"It is very unfortunate that the Security Council was unable to have a simple reaction in the form of a presidential statement," Mansour told reporters.
The council had been meeting for the last week to try to reach an agreement on the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by Israel's closure of the Gaza Strip.
