Ukraine, Poland vow to resolve border situation |

Ukraine and Poland pledged Tuesday to seek various ways to improve the fraught situation at the border caused by striking Polish customs officials.
"The strike by Polish customs officials will not have any negative influence on Ukrainian-Polish relations," visiting Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told a press conference in Kiev after meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Ohryzko.
Ohryzko highly appraised the two countries' bilateral relations, saying that "the border issues will be resolved through joint efforts as soon as possible."
Ohryzko said particular attention was being paid to the issue of signing a Ukrainian-Polish agreement on border movement.
The strike by Polish customs officials came in response to a refusal by the government to improve working conditions for customs workers after Poland became a member of the Schengen Treaty at the beginning of 2008, which obliged Poland to enforce more complicated and stringent border rules.
The strike, targeted at freight lorries and trains, at its peak created traffic jams exceeding 60 km and delays of up to three days for hapless lorry drivers.
