Germany would increase its aid to Afghanistan by a million euros (1.5 million dollars) largely to help the locals fight a particularly harsh winter, local reports said Wednesday.

Development Minister Heidemarie Wieczorek-Zeul said Wednesday that heavy snowfalls and temperatures reaching minus 20 degrees centigrade are making life especially hard in Afghanistan, German news agency DPA reported.

The additional aid would help up to 2.5 million people seeking shelters and more clothes, he said.

The German Foreign Ministry announced last week that it was increasing its aid to Afghanistan by a million U.S. dollars after the U.N. aid organizations called for 80 million dollars in additional aid for the country.
