Four people including a police chief in Mexico's southern Oaxaca state were killed by gunmen Wednesday at a sports center near Oaxaca city, police said.

An unidentified group of gunmen armed with long-range weapons stormed into El Tequio, a sports center near the airport of Oaxaca city, capital of Oaxaca state on Wednesday morning, police said.

They shot at Alejandro Barrita, director of Oaxaca's Banking and Industrial Police, his bodyguard and two civilians and then fled.

The Radio Formula network said the assailants used AK-47 rifles and Oaxaca's sports star Virginia Galan was among the victims.

According to local media, about 20 people, including six minors, have been killed in Oaxaca in gun violence so far this month.
