French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his girlfriend Carla Bruni are suing Irish airline Ryanair over an advertisement photo referring to the couple's wedding, their lawyer said on Wednesday.

The airline used the photograph without the couple's consent, their lawyer Thierry Herzog said, adding that Sarkozy asked for a symbolic 1 euro (1.47 U.S. dollars) in damages, while Bruni, a former supermodel, was seeking 500,000 euros (740,000 U.S. dollars), the average cost for using her image in France.

The low-cost company has apologized in a statement for any offence caused by the "humorous comment on a matter of great public interest in France."

A Paris court is due to hear the case Thursday.

According to local media, Sarkozy, 53, has hinted at a wedding with Bruni, 40, since the couple met in November, one month after he ended his 11-year marriage to his second wife and became the first French president to divorce while in office.
