At least 4 civilians were killed Thursday in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna peninsula, defense officials said.

The blast took place opposite the Adiyapadam school at Thirunelveli in Jaffna shortly after 11 a.m. local time (0530 GMT),officials added. No security forces personnel were among the victims, officials said.

Seven others injured had been admitted to the hospital. The city of Jaffna is under government control.

The blast is the latest in the escalation of the armed conflict since the government unilaterally abrogated the February 2002 ceasefire agreement brokered by the Norwegian peace facilitators.
